World COPD Day 2023 | “Breathing is Life – Act Earlier”
November 15th is World COPD Day, so why not learn more about COPD?
What is World COPD Day?
World COPD Day was established by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) to raise awareness, share knowledge, and discuss ways to reduce the burden of COPD worldwide. GOLD is a global organization promoting COPD awareness, prevention and treatment. Every year, the third Wednesday of November is World COPD Day, and various COPD awareness events are held around the world. For more information, please visit GOLD’s website.
About COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
COPD is a chronic inflammatory lung disease. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions that contribute to COPD. The main cause is the influx of toxic substances contained in cigarette smoke into the lung. Toxic substances cause inflammation in the bronchi and alveoli, destroying the alveoli, resulting in loss of lung elasticity and reduced respiratory function. As the disease worsens, coughing, belching, and shortness of breath become more frequent, leading to a decline in QOL. The current treatment for COPD is to relieve symptoms and control the progression of the disease. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop drugs that cure the inflammation of broken alveoli and bronchioles and restore respiratory function. For more information, please visit WHO's website.
SMC have a preclinical model of COPD, porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE)-induced emphysema mice model. In this model, destruction of alveolar walls is observed by day 21 after intratracheal administration of PPE. It is possible to evaluate the drug efficacy of your test substance by calculating mean linear intercept by histological analysis and counting the number of inflammatory cells and analyzing inflammatory cytokines in BALF.
