Galectin-3 in IPF model

Galectin-3 is a lectin protein which mediates the development of fibrosis, and has increased levels in macrophages in a variety of organs.

It is reported that Galectin-3 null mice are resistant to liver, lung and heart fibrosis. Currently, a phase 2 clinical trial using a Galectin-3 inhibitor is being conducted in IPF patients.


The results of our histological analysis of Galectin-3 in the IPF model shows the following features.


Galectin-3 in IPF

- Elevates at 3 weeks of age, representing late fibrosis stage in IPF.

- Prominent staining of macrophages expanded due to phagocytosis.

- Shows increase similar to human IPF patients [Nishi et al., Allergol Int., 2007]


We have evaluated over 80 test substances in our IPF model.
